What is an Oral Infection?

Oral infection is caused by harmful bacteria, viruses, or fungi that infiltrate the tissues in your mouth as a result of poor oral hygiene, untreated dental problems, smoking, or underlying medical conditions like diabetes. These infections can range in severity and can affect the gums, teeth, tongue, lips, or inner cheeks. To avoid discomfort, difficulties, and long-term oral health problems, early detection and professional dental care are crucial.

Signs and Symptoms of Oral Infections

If you observe any of the following, schedule an appointment with your dentist:

  • Persistent toothache or gum pain
  • Swelling of the gums, face, or jaw
  • Persistent bad breath or unpleasant taste
  • Mouth sores, ulcers, or white/red spots
  • Gums that bleed frequently or appear inflamed
  • Fever, tiredness or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck

These symptoms are abnormal and should be assessed by a dentist as soon as possible.

Preventing Oral Infections

Prevention starts with daily oral care and routine dental visits:

1. Brush and Floss Daily

Your first line of defense against diseases is maintaining proper dental hygiene. To remove bacteria between your teeth, brush twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day.

2. Stay Hydrated

A dry mouth is an ideal habitat for harmful bacteria. To encourage the production of saliva, drink water throughout the day.

3. Eat a Balanced Diet

Foods rich in Vitamin A, C, and D boosts your immune system and support oral health.

4. Avoid Tobacco Products

Your immune system weakened by smoking and chewing tobacco, which also raises your risk of gum disease and oral infections.

5. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Regular examinations can prevent oral infections and identify issues early.
